There are literally dozens of hikes available including around the lake, along the rivers, native bush and mountain trails. Maps for these hikes are available form the Taupo Information Centre on Tongariro Street.

of the finest wine cellars in New Zealand is Taupo's own 'Scenic Cellars'. There is also the Wishart Winery is located in Taupo.

Alternatively, take a day trip the fantastic wine region of the Hawkes Bay.

The Central Plateau, including Lake Taupo, is unique, spectacular and is renowned for the amazing lake activities on offer, sporting events it hosts, entertainment of all descriptions from relaxing on the lake in pursuit of a trophy trout or to skydiving from 12,000 feet. This picture perfect part of New Zealand has something for everyone.

Drive no more than 40 minutes to enjoy skiing at Whakapapa, New Zealand's largest ski field, abseiling, lake and river fishing, white water rafting, mountaineering, hunting, mountain biking, horse riding, sailing, kayaking, tramping and walking, swimming, caving, playing tennis, golf on the stunning Turangi course or bowls, perhaps a scenic flight.

At the end of the day you can soothe the soul in natural thermal waters at Tokaanu. The National Trout Centre is also just a short drive away.

Make a great day of it with excursions into the Tongariro National Park, Kaimanawa Forest Park, Pureroa Forest Park as well as being only a 40 minute drive to the Whakapapa ski area on Mt Ruapehu.

Several small picturesque settlements are close by. Kuratau, Omori, Pukawa and Whareroa are lakeside settlements a short drive off the Western Bays Highway, while other delightfully situated villages from Motuoapa to Hatepe are passed on State Highway 1 driving north from Turangi to Taupo.

See New Zealand's largest Totara tree it's a stunning 30 minute walk through native forest off State Highway 30.

The Waihora lagoon Walk takes just 20 minutes. Surrounded by tall Rimu and Kahikatea trees, the lagoon is one of Pureroa Forest Park's most beautiful spots.

The Waihaha River is well stocked with Rainbow and Brown trout. Make sure you have a Lake Taupo fishing license.

The Tauranga Taupo River. Taupo's second largest river is nearby.

White Water Rafting on Tongariro River.

The Tihoi Trading Post is a cozy pub and restaurant with a great collection of historic photos of the area.
Abseiling and Rock climbing is great outdoor fun that will give you a real sense of achievement.
Wilderness Horse Trekking - All the pleasure of bush walking but a lot easier on your feet.
Windsurfing - Join the Swans, Ducks and Herons in some low level lake flying.
